Lexington, KY (September 18, 2012) ? The United States Dressage Federation announced today that the Succeed/USDF FEI-Level Trainers? Conference will feature Olympian Steffen Peters and USEF National Young Dressage Horse Coach Scott Hassler.? The conference will be held January 21-22, 2013 at Mary Anne McPhail?s High Meadow Farm in Loxahatchee, Florida.? During this year?s conference, Peters and Hassler will engage qualified attendees in a peer-to-peer format focused on identifying each horse?s strengths and weaknesses and improving attendees? problem solving skills, allowing them to make better training decisions.? Peters will be hands-on with FEI-level horses, spending time in the saddle as he demonstrates and conveys his training techniques aimed at achieving a direct improvement in each horse?s performance. Peters and Hassler will also engage selected participants in thought-provoking training scenarios as they ride.

Steffen Peters is one of the most sought after trainers and clinicians in the world and is known for his correct and sympathetic approach.? In addition to his training credentials, Peters has a highly decorated international competitive career.? He recently made history in having the number one and number two horses for the 2012 US Olympic team. Peters earned an Individual and Team Gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games, earned an Individual Bronze medal in both the Grand Prix Special and Grand Prix Dressage at the 2010 World Equestrian Games, won the 2009 World Cup, placed fourth individually in the 2008 Olympic Games, earned a Team Bronze medal in the 1996 Olympics, has been named as USEF Equestrian of the Year an unprecedented three times, and has won six USEF National Grand Prix Dressage Championship titles.

Scott Hassler, a well sought after clinician, is one of our country?s most respected all-around horsemen and is an internationally respected and accomplished trainer and educator.? Hassler?s straightforward and simple training and coaching techniques have been used to successfully develop horses of all ages through the Grand Prix level, as well as helped achieve the best US result to date at the World Championships for Young Horses, with a fourth place finish in 2005.? Hassler?s visionary impact and dedication to the sport is further illustrated in the Young Dressage Horse Trainers Symposium, which Hassler initiated while he was at Hilltop Farm. Its central themes are?atonement?and?repentance. Jewish people traditionally observe this holy day with a 25-hour period of?fasting?and intensive?prayer, often spending most of the day in?synagogue?services. Yom Kippur completes the annual period known in?Judaism?as the?High Holy Days?or Yamim Nora?im (?Days of Awe?).

Yom Kippur is the tenth day of the month of?Tishrei. According to Jewish tradition,?God?inscribes each person?s fate for the coming year into a book, the?Book of Life, on?Rosh Hashanah, and waits until Yom Kippur to ?seal? the verdict. During the Days of Awe, a Jew tries to amend his or her behavior and seek forgiveness for wrongs done against God and against other human beings. The evening and day of Yom Kippur are set aside for public and private petitions and confessions of guilt. ?At the end of Yom Kippur, one hopes that they have been forgiven by God.

The Yom Kippur prayer service includes several unique aspects. One is the actual number of prayer services. Unlike a regular day, which has three prayer services (Ma?ariv, the evening prayer;?Shacharit, the morning prayer; and?Mincha, the afternoon prayer), or a?Shabbat?or?Yom Tov, which have four prayer services (Ma?ariv;?Shacharit;?Mussaf, the additional prayer; and?Mincha), Yom Kippur has five prayer services (Ma?ariv;?Shacharit;?Musaf;?Mincha; and?Ne?ilah, the closing prayer). The prayer services also include private and public confessions of sins (Vidui) and a unique prayer dedicated to the special Yom Kippur?avodah?(service) of the?Kohen Gadol?in the?Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

As one of the most culturally significant Jewish holidays, Yom Kippur is observed by many?secular Jews?who may not observe other holidays. Many secular Jews attend synagogue on Yom Kippur?for many secular Jews the High Holy Days are the only recurring times of the year in which they attend synagogue??causing synagogue attendance to soar.

?Zipcar For Scooters? Startup Scoot Networks Launches To The Public In San Francisco

Scoot Networks has been called the "Zipcar for scooters," and is quietly building a (small) fleet of electric, short-range vehicles for getting around San Francisco. The startup started with just 10 scooters, but is expanding that to 50 over the coming weeks, as it opens its service in a public beta today. Scoot hopes to provide a local transportation alternative to cars and other vehicle, with availability of Vespa-style scooters for rental for a maximum of $5 an hour, or $10 per commute during the week. The startup, which bills itself as the "easiest, fastest, cheapest ride in SF," has built up a small fleet of scooters that users can rent and unlock with their mobile phones.

Obama honors dead from Libya, vows resolve in Mideast

ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, Maryland (Reuters) - President Barack Obama vowed on Friday that U.S. resolve would be unshaken by violent anti-American protests sweeping the Muslim world as he honored the return of the bodies of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans killed in an attack in Libya this week.

Leading a somber ceremony with the flag-draped caskets of the Libya dead laid out beside him, Obama pledged to "bring to justice the ones who took them from us" and to hold foreign governments responsible for safeguarding U.S. diplomatic installations now under threat.

"The United States will never retreat from the world," Obama told an audience of grieving family members, diplomats and dignitaries inside a vast aircraft hangar at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington.

Obama spoke as fury about a film that insults the Prophet Mohammad tore across the Middle East and other parts of the Muslim world after weekly prayers on Friday, with protesters attacking U.S. embassies and burning American flags as the Pentagon rushed to bolster security at U.S. missions.

The Pentagon is sending a platoon of Marines to bolster security at the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, following similar reinforcements sent to Libya and Yemen, a U.S. official said.

The obscure California-made film triggered an attack on the U.S. consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans on Tuesday, the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 al Qaeda attacks on the United States.

The Libya attack and rapid spread of anti-U.S. violence to other Muslim countries have raised questions about Obama's handling of the Arab Spring - still-unfolding revolutions he has cautiously sought to nurture - even as he seeks re-election in November in a closely contested race.

The wave of attacks has reverberated in the presidential campaign, with Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his allies seizing the chance to reassert accusations that Obama has weakened U.S. global leadership.

Romney, who has been accused by his Democratic opponents of trying to exploit a national tragedy for electoral gain, paused in his campaigning in Ohio to watch the ceremony on television and then led a moment of silence for the slain Americans.

At a breakfast fundraiser earlier in New York, however, he suggested Obama's foreign policy lacked "clarity of purpose."

U.S. RESOLVE

Obama's latest foreign policy crisis comes less than two months before the U.S. presidential election.

He acknowledged "these are difficult days" but expressed firm resolve to persist in his Middle East policies. "We will stand fast against the violence on our diplomatic missions," he the crowd of more than 200 mourners.

"We will continue to do everything in our power to protect Americans serving overseas, whether that means increasing security at our diplomatic posts, working with host countries which have an obligation to provide security and making it clear that justice will come to those who harm Americans," he said.

The State Department said some 65 U.S. diplomatic missions around the world had put out security or emergency messages for U.S. citizens as the protests expanded over the past two days.

Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said no decisions had been taken on reducing embassy staff or their dependents in the affected countries.

The ceremony marked the poignant homecoming of the bodies of Stevens, State Department information management officer Sean Smith and security personnel Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, both former Navy SEALS.

Some U.S. officials believe the deadly attack could have been plotted in advance, but White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Friday he had no information suggesting the assault on the Benghazi consulate was "pre-planned."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, appearing to struggle to control her emotions, repeated that the U.S. government had nothing to do with the making of the inflammatory film, and she insisted the violent response was "totally unacceptable."

She said countries like Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Yemen, which had cast off authoritarian rulers, "did not trade the tyranny of a dictator for the tyranny of a mob."

Echoing Obama's sentiments, the nation's top diplomat said: "We will wipe away our tears, stiffen our spines and face the future undaunted."

Also in attendance were Vice President Joe Biden, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Colin Powell, who served as secretary of state under Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush.

At the start of the ceremony, Marine pall bearers hoisted the caskets one by one from a military cargo plane and carried them into the hangar while a military band played somber music. As Obama spoke, he was flanked by four hearses with a large American flag hanging from the rafters behind him.

For regular slappers and slappees, "there's practically zero chance that there will be an award for anywhere near one million dollars or even for more than $20,000," Lenoir said. "I'd put $20,000 at the high end."

How early social deprivation impairs long-term cognitive function

ScienceDaily (Sep. 13, 2012) ? A growing body of research shows that children who suffer severe neglect and social isolation have cognitive and social impairments as adults. A study from Boston Children's Hospital shows, for the first time, how these functional impairments arise: Social isolation during early life prevents the cells that make up the brain's white matter from maturing and producing the right amount of myelin, the fatty "insulation" on nerve fibers that helps them transmit long-distance messages within the brain.

The study also identifies a molecular pathway that is involved in these abnormalities, showing it is disrupted by social isolation and suggesting it could potentially be targeted with drugs. Finally, the research indicates that the timing of social deprivation is an important factor in causing impairment. The findings are reported in the Sept. 14 issue of the journal Science.

The researchers, led by Gabriel Corfas, PhD, and Manabu Makinodan, MD, PhD, both of the F.M. Kirby Neurobiology Center at Boston Children's Hospital, modeled social deprivation in mice by putting them in isolation for two weeks.

When isolation occurred during a "critical period," starting three weeks after birth, cells called oligodendrocytes failed to mature in the prefrontal cortex, a brain region important for cognitive function and social behavior. As a result, nerve fibers had thinner coatings of myelin, which is produced by oligodendrocytes, and the mice showed impairments in social interaction and working memory.

Studies of children raised in institutions where neglect was rampant, including another recent study from Boston Children's Hospital, have found changes in white matter in the prefrontal cortex, but the mechanism for the changes hasn't been clear. The new study adds to a growing body of evidence that so-called glial cells, including oligodendrocytes, do more than just support neurons, but rather participate actively in setting up the brain's circuitry as they receive input from the environment.

"In general, the thinking has been that experience shapes the brain by influencing neurons," explains Corfas, the study's team leader and senior investigator, who also holds an appointment in the Departments of Neurology and Otolaryngology at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. "We are showing that glial cells are also influenced by experience, and that this is an essential step in establishing normal, mature neuronal circuits. Our findings provide a cellular and molecular context to understand the consequences of social isolation."

Myelin is essential in boosting the speed and efficiency of communication between different areas of the brain, so the decreased myelination may explain the social and cognitive deficits in the mice. Corfas has previously shown that abnormal myelination alters dopaminergic signaling in the brain, which could provide an alternative explanation for the findings.

The new study also showed that effects of social isolation are timing-dependent. If mice were isolated during a specific period in their development, they failed to recover functioning even when they were put back in a social environment. Conversely, if mice were put in isolation after this so-called critical period, they remained normal.

Finally, Corfas and colleagues identified a molecular signaling pathway through which social isolation leads to abnormal myelination. The brains of socially isolated mice had less neuregulin-1 (NRG1), a protein essential to the development of the nervous system. Furthermore, when the team eliminated an NRG1 receptor known as ErbB3 from oligodendrocytes, the effect was the same as being in isolation -- myelination and behavior were abnormal even when the mice were in a stimulating, social environment.

"These observations indicate that the mechanisms we found are necessary for the brain to 'benefit' from early social experience," says Corfas.

The Corfas lab is now investigating drugs that might stimulate myelin growth by targeting NRG1, ErbB3 or related pathways. "Having both too much and too little myelination is bad," Corfas cautions. "This is a pathway that requires very careful regulation."

A number of neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and mood disorders have been linked to pathologic changes in white matter and myelination, and to disturbances in the NRG1-ErbB signaling pathway, Corfas notes. Thus, the findings of this study may offer a new approach to these disorders.

Manabu Makinodan, MD, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in Corfas' lab, was first author on the paper. The study was funded by the NIH, the National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke of the NIH.

Netanyahu deputy disagrees on setting Iran "red line"

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Benjamin Netanyahu's deputy for intelligence and atomic affairs on Thursday broke with the Israeli prime minister's call for Iran to be confronted with a "red line" beyond which its disputed nuclear program would face military attack.

In a broadcast interview, Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor appeared to side with the United States in balking at Netanyahu's repeated demand that it set Iran an ultimatum or risk seeing Israel launch region-rattling unilateral strikes.

Meridor's remarks also underscored debate within the leader's inner circle about potentially exacerbating the rift with Washington with a war that polls show most Israelis, including several senior security figures, would oppose.

"I don't want to set red lines or deadlines for myself," Meridor, one of several Netanyahu deputies who form the core of his security cabinet, told Israel's Army Radio when asked how much time remained before force against Iran should be used.

He called for international sanctions against Tehran to be intensified "so it understands that the price it is paying is mounting and that the only way to be rid of it is to stop the (nuclear) race, to arrive at an agreement, or an international understanding, that it is calling it quits".

"You always consider other options, for when everything else is exhausted. And I think that, for now, we have to continue with the pressure."

That echoed U.S. President Barack Obama, who seeks reelection in November and has tried to champion continued carrot-and-stick diplomacy with Iran while fending off charges by Republican rival Mitt Romney that he is soft on the Jewish state's security. Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons.

Netanyahu's office did not immediately respond to the Meridor interview, which followed similar misgivings on Tuesday by Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak, who publicly suggested the premier was undermining ties with the United States.

Though he did not mention Netanyahu by name, Meridor lamented what he called "the excessive chit-chat of recent months" in Israel about how and whether to tackle its arch-foe.

He spoke of the importance of U.S. diplomatic and defence assistance to Israel, and took a more moderate view of a nuclear-armed Iran than Netanyahu, who has likened that prospect to a second Holocaust.

"I don't want to speak in apocalyptic ... Holocaust terms," said Meridor, a veteran member of the ruling, rightist Likud party. "I think that we are strong and we will overcome the challenges, but this is a serious challenge."

Though widely assumed to have an nuclear arsenal, Israel's conventional forces are designed for border wars and many experts - including the top U.S. general, Martin Dempsey - have voiced doubt over the degree to which they could damage the distant, dispersed and well-defended Iranian nuclear facilities.

In comments that may have been designed to hint at the feasibility of a secret solo strike, Netanyahu on Thursday praised the Israeli military during a meeting with its high command.

"From time to time, operations have been necessitated, and they were carried out with exemplary success," he said. "Israel's citizens should know what I know - that there is someone to depend on. There is someone who is ready for the job."

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Conservatives have pulled advertising dollars out of Pennsylvania and Michigan and instead are focusing their money on less costly toss-up states.

Independent groups are spending nearly $13 million in the coming days to counter President Barack Obama's nominating convention in hopes of limiting any improvement he might see in polls.

But conservatives' hopes of expanding the playing field for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney are on hold for the moment, according to consultants who track spending on political ads.

"Over the last several weeks, the dynamics have been changing in a number of states that have led us to dedicate resources elsewhere," said Jonathan Collegio, a spokesman for American Crossroads, a super PAC advised by George W. Bush political guru Karl Rove.

While he said Pennsylvania remains highly competitive, Collegio said that "a statewide buy in Pennsylvania can cost more than buys in several other states combined."

American Crossroads on Wednesday announced it planned to spend $6.8 million over the next 10 days to air ads criticizing Obama's economic record. The group is running its ad in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia for the next 10 days.

Another conservative independent group, Americans for Prosperity, is spending $6.2 million on ads critical of Democrats' national health care overhaul. Founded by billionaire oil magnate brothers David and Charles Koch, the group is running ads in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin and North Carolina.

The group's ad, also released Wednesday, is the final piece of a $27 million effort in recent weeks to weaken Obama's re-election prospects.

But Pennsylvania, a state Obama won in 2008 with close to 55 percent of the vote, is not on the schedule for the latest advertising buys. Nor is Michigan, the state Obama won with 57 percent and which Romney's father led as governor ? and where Romney was born and raised.

Romney has not advertised in Pennsylvania since April. Obama's last advertising effort was in July.

Earlier this month, Americans for Prosperity and Restore Our Future super PAC, another group supporting Romney, aired ads in Pennsylvania. Obama's super PAC, Priorities USA Action, aired ads in Pennsylvania last month, too.

Essential Responsibilities

• As a member of the Boston Foundation?s Communications Department, the Communications Manager will be primarily responsible for developing materials, including publications, e-newsletters, direct mail pieces, invitations to events, ads for event programs, magazines and newspapers, website copy and other collaterals
• Write and edit content for print, online and social media communications as needed
• Ensure that the Boston Foundation?s efforts to communicate topics of interest are fresh and relevant to the targeted audiences, and reflect the Foundation?s communications strategies and objectives
• Stay abreast of community foundation communications standards nationally
• Assist in editorial and design coordination for miscellaneous communications projects

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) ? President Juan Manuel Santos announced on Tuesday a preliminary accord with Colombia's main leftist rebel group to launch talks aimed at ending a stubborn, century-old conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

In a nationally televised speech, Santos called the agreement a roadmap to "a definitive peace" and said it was reached after six months of direct talks in Cuba, with that country's government and Norway serving as brokers following a year and a half of preparatory work.

The agreement does not include a cease-fire. Nor does it grant a safe haven to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, as occurred during the last peace talks, which lasted three years and ended disastrously in 2002.

The talks to end the Western Hemisphere's longest-running conflict will begin in the first half of October in Oslo, Norway, and continue in Havana, Santos said.

FARC leaders held a news conference later Tuesday in Havana.

Santos said the talks, the fourth with the peasant-based FARC in three decades, would be different from past talks because they have "a realistic agenda" that includes the FARC agreeing to eventually lay down its arms and become integrated into the country's political life.

Other Colombian rebel movements, most notably M-19 in 1990, have done that successfully.

Santos, a social progressive who dealt the FARC major blows as defense minister from 2006-2009, said key topics would be agrarian reform, returning stolen land, reducing poverty and compensating victims.

Santos said one major point on the agenda was drug trafficking, highly sensitive because it is believed to be the FARC's main funding source.

The FARC, classified as an international terror organization by the U.S. State Department, is only one of various illegal armed groups in Colombia funded by the drug trade.

They include remnants of far-right militias known as paramilitaries that were created to fight the FARC in the 1980s and became private armies for drug traffickers and wealth landholders. The paramilitaries made peace with Santos' predecessor, Alvaro Uribe, who opposes peace talks with the FARC.

Santos said the talks would not be open-ended.

"They will be measured in months, not in years," he said. He did not, however, set a deadline. Nor did he say when the accord was signed.

Santos is mindful of Colombia's strongly conservative bent, and was firm about what he called the government's insistence on not ceding an inch of territory.

"If there are not advances, we simply won't continue," he said, adding that "military operations will continue with the same or stepped up intensity."

Santos also did not mention a major potential obstacle to peace: amnesty for rebel leaders. A law his government sponsored that was passed in June sets a framework for amnesties and pardons for rebel and military leaders.
