BALTIMORE (AP) - The Oakland Athletics knew they had the potential to be one of the best teams in the majors.
They're now putting that talent on full display, and the results have thrust the surging A's to the brink of the best July in franchise history.
Yoenis Cespedes and Chris Carter hit two-run homers to back an effective pitching performance by Bartolo Colon, and Oakland beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 Saturday night for its ninth win in 10 games.
Jemile Weeks had three hits and scored twice for the A's, who are 18-3 (.857) in July. With one victory in the next three games, they'll finish the month with a better winning percentage than the 1931 club (26-7, .788).
"It's been impressive - I think for a lot of people, surprising," Weeks said. "For me, I always knew that this team was going to be somebody that could make some noise, and we're just starting to show that now. It's pleasing to see at this point."
Oakland has scored 40 runs in its last four games, including 16 in Toronto on Wednesday and 14 against the Orioles in the series opener. Saturday night, the A's combined offensive firepower and strong pitching to move in position for a sweep of fading Baltimore.
"Pitching's been our strength all year," manager Bob Melvin said. "We've come around offensively here recently. Certainly, the last month's indicative because of our record, but the pitching's been there all year."
Colon (7-8) scattered seven hits over 5 2-3 shutout innings, striking out five and walking one, to earn his first win in six starts since June 12. The 39-year-old is 12-8 with a 3.10 ERA lifetime against Baltimore, dating to 1998 when he pitched for Cleveland.
Nick Markakis' ninth-inning homer off Evan Scribner enabled the Orioles to avoid being blanked for the eighth time. Baltimore went down in order only once but stranded 11, went 0 for 6 with men in scoring position and lost for the fifth time in six games.
"They're trying. It's just not happening," manager Buck Showalter said. "I see them trying firsthand. It's not for lack of effort or lack of attention to what's causing it. When they do hit the ball on the button and it's right at somebody, it's frustrating. But if they keep going it will happen. It's not like it hasn't happened all year."
Tommy Hunter (4-6) gave up five runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings. The right-hander has yielded 24 home runs this season, at least one in all but two of his 16 starts.
"They hit two pretty darn good pitches," he said. "Outside of that, it is what it is."
Oakland broke on top in the fourth when Weeks led off with a single and Cespedes hit his 14th home run. The Orioles got a hit in each of the first four innings but failed four times to produce with runners in scoring position.
The Athletics made it 3-0 in the fifth. Kurt Suzuki hit an opposite-field double to right and scored on a single by Eric Sogard.
Carter chased Hunter in the sixth with a drive to left after Seth Smith hit a leadoff single. It was Carter's eighth homer since rejoining the A's on June 29.
"We're seeing Chris Carter (be) the guy we all hoped and anticipated him being," Melvin said. "Right now, he's quite a force and one of the reasons that, offensively, we've been so good this month."
In the bottom half, the Orioles got singles from Wilson Betemit and Mark Reynolds before Jordan Norberto struck out Omar Quintanilla to end the inning.
Adam Jones grounded out in the Baltimore seventh with two outs and runners on second and third.
Weeks singled and scored on a triple by Cespedes in the eighth.

Rats leave bacteria that can cause diseases such as the deadly Leptospirosis, typhus fever, and rat-bite fever. Rats transmit disease through numerous ways: their hair, their droppings and their urine. If food or water that has been contaminated is consumed, it could also cause food poisoning.
Moreover, if you own a rental property or a business establishment, the sight of rat would most likely drive your potential and existing customers away. Thus, for a business, controlling or totally eliminating these pests from your building is of utmost importance.
Other than that, rats are quite destructive in many ways. They not only dig holes or create holes in your walls or cabinets, but their droppings and urine can also affect the air quality inside your home.
With all these hazards that such rodents can cause, it is indeed very important not to take them for granted. If you see rats running inside your home or you start seeing signs of existence of rats, doing pest control methods to get rid of rats immediately will definitely save you from all possible dangers it can cause later on. The good news is that if you live in Islington and nearby areas in the UK, there are reputable and experienced pest control Islington companies you can turn to in solving this problem. Through a comprehensive and efficient pest control service, you can easily get rid of rats from your home. Most importantly, you do not have to worry about decomposing rats that create a strong unpleasant odor, as most pest control companies can take care of this thing for you.
When Is the Best Time to Contact an Islington Pest control Islington?
You will probably need more professional help in late summer or early autumn, which is the breeding time of rats. However, if you see signs of rats' presence in your house or building, you can always contact a pest control company for help. This is most especially important if you see them running around during the day. Because rats are mostly active at night, seeing them running in your home during the day is a strong indication that they are plenty of them.
Why Should You Not Exterminate Rats Yourself?
Exterminating rats is a tough and messy job. Using of traps, for instance, only usually get the rats by the neck. So doing the job yourself also means not only trapping them but also dealing with the dead rats and disposing them properly. If you don't do it properly, you might even contact bacteria that can cause diseases.
Moreover, these traps are only good if you only have one or two rats running around. But if there are plenty of rats inside your house, the mechanical methods of getting rid of rats might not work well and you might need more advanced methods, such as using of chemical sprays that only licensed pest control companies have access to.
If you start seeing signs of rats in your home or business, seek professional help from a reliable pest control Islington company immediately. A good Islington pest control firm knows various methods on how to kill rats and prevent them from coming back.

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) ? Ford's profit fell 57 percent in the second quarter as losses in Europe and Asia swamped a healthy performance in North America.
The company also lowered its full-year profit forecast on Wednesday. The automaker said it still expects a "strong" operating profit, but it will be lower than the $8.7 billion in 2011. Previously Ford had expected to make about the same amount as 2011.
Ford now expects to lose more than $1 billion in Europe this year, more than double its estimate at the beginning of this year.
Ford earned to $1 billion, or 26 cents per share, in the quarter, compared with $2.4 billion, or 59 cents, a year earlier. Without one-time items, including the sale of two parts factories, it earned 30 cents. That beat Wall Street's forecast of 28 cents.
Quarterly revenue fell 6 percent to $33.3 billion.
Ford posted a $2 billion profit in North America in the second quarter thanks to higher pricing and highly anticipated new vehicles like the Ford Escape. That was up 5.3 percent from a year earlier.
But Ford lost $404 million in Europe, down from a profit of $176 million last year, as sales slowed because of the economic crisis. Ford said it sold 359,000 cars and trucks in the region, down 15 percent from the same quarter in 2011. Ford also lost market share in Europe as it refused to ramp up deals to lure buyers.
Ford lost $66 million in Asia, where it is in the midst of a multiyear plan to increase production and vehicle offerings. That was down from a $1 million profit in the same quarter a year earlier.
Ford's profits also narrowed considerably in South America, where it is being hurt by older products and rising tariffs. The company earned $5 million in South America in the second quarter, down 98 percent.
Gone were the days when people depended on their sheer physical strength to get manual work done. In the past, people relied on hammers, saws, grinders and wrenches to be able to do their repair or construction work. Today, these tools are still useful but one can accelerate the efficiency of their work by using what are called as "cordless power tools".
These cordless tools perform the same functions as your good old hammers and wrenches, except that they do the work on a much powerful scale. In short, they are tools on steroids. Cordless machines are convenient, because they do not need to be connected directly to an electric source in order to be used. Thus, they present many benefits to any do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiast who wants to get down to elbow grease.
The following are examples of the most commonly used cordless equipment:
1. Cordless Reciprocating Saw. This is a powerful electric saw that can be used for smoothly cutting thick materials such as pipes, ceilings, hard wood planks, and floorings. This tool has sharp blades that rapidly move up and down. The cordless reciprocating saw itself must be held with both hands because it is usually larger than jigsaws. If you are planning to do some serious home improvement work, this piece of equipment is a must have.
2. Cordless Drill. This tool is used for drilling holes on walls or driving screws to attach two objects together. Instead of spending hours on drilling through screwdrivers, the cordless electric drill can sink screws faster than you can imagine. The reason why this piece of equipment is effective is because it is powered electrically and it uses an air pump device that causes the machine to work more forcefully than usefully. This is perfect for attaching curtains, putting up doors, and repairing automotive parts.
3. Cordless Impact Wrench. This is used for major DIY and construction projects, because of its ability to tighten sockets and screws faster than you can imagine. Its air compression feature allows for high impact hammering of and tightening of sockets, such as in wheels, automotive parts and assembling loose appliances.
There are many other cordless power tools and equipment that anyone can use for everyday situations. However, it is also useful to understand that these come in many different brands, types, and prices. While you may get a good bargain for discounted tools, purchasing original, durable and branded items are proven to be the best option for long term use.
Gasweld is a unique hardware store that offers power tools online. Their wide range of cordless power tools and equipment can be used for construction, repair, automotive, and home improvement.

An Environmental Contractor services are important within the conservation of natural resources. Contractors are responsible for reliable and competitive industrial waste operations. They are able to handle a number of industrial wastes like heavy metals, radioactive materials, asbestos and so on from communities to businesses.
A form of an Environmental Contractor, the remediation contractor, provides services for the government and private institutions. They may be in charge of proper compilation of water wastes, asbestos management, creations of sewage systems, as well as other valuable nature and resource saving processes that is certainly very eco ? friendly to Mother Earth and her people.
These Environmental Contractors make our living, our work place, and our community safe for usage and proof against harmful contaminants and materials thus bringing about a non ? toxic life.
Not just Environmental Contractors help clients in solving their waste management woes but also they advocate and support certain activities that help fight deterioration of the environment.
1. Need for Proper Waste Disposal. Contractors will have knowledge with this matter. They are the ones contacted when remediation associated with an area is deemed necessary to prevent future contamination. Along with this advocacy, simple waste disposal from the people like throwing your trash within the right garbage bin or perhaps plainly keeping your surroundings clean really can come up with a huge difference.
2. Reforestation. If we cut one huge tree, we have to plant 10 or higher tree saplings in return. Because an indication of an evergrowing tree means a way for a cleaner and fresher air for people. There are lots of organizations that support this advocacy and joining them is an additional good idea.
3. The three Rs, Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle. This may slow down the filling of our landfills. It also provides cheap alternatives if we decide to reuse old materials. Recycling is becoming a very important thing in fighting against environmental decay.
4. Pollution avoidance to the Environment. Smoking, even though you alone, contribute a good deal in the cause of pollution. Quitting would have been a nice help for the environment and never simply Mother Nature but additionally together with you just as one individual. It will also help you to have a healthier lifestyle for longer life.
5. Use plastic less whenever possible. These are non ? biodegradable and will help with pollution. As an alternative to using plastic, use paper bags, biodegradable bags or reusable tote bags.
Together with Environmental Remediation Contractors, these tips and activities will greatly contribute within our mission of protecting Mother Earth. It might be a smaller thing however when all the people following these simple activities it will make a massive difference. Point is let us be suspicious our individual actions on the environment and why don?t we help out with its preservation.

Three NASA satellites reveal unprecedented melting over four days over a widespread area in Greenland.
By Seth Borenstein,?Associated Press / July 24, 2012
Measurements from three satellites showed that on July 8 (right) about 40 percent of the ice sheet had undergone thawing at or near the surface. In just a few days (July 12), an estimated 97 percent of the ice sheet surface had thawed. The areas classified as ?probable melt? (light pink) correspond to those sites where at least one satellite detected surface melting. The areas classified as ?melt? (dark pink) correspond to sites where two or three satellites detected surface melting.

Even Greenland's coldest place showed melting. Records show that last happened in 1889 and occurs about once every 150 years.
NASA says three satellites saw what it calls unprecedented melting over four days beginning July 8. Most of the thick ice remains. But what was unusual was that the melting occurred over a widespread area.
NASA says the melting area went from 40 percent of the ice sheet to 97 percent. Until now, the most extensive melt seen by satellites in the past 30 years was about 55 percent.
Scientists cannot say yet if the melting is from global warming or natural.
WOODS HOLE, MASS.The microbes and viruses shrouded in darkness below the ocean floor are bound to become much less mysterious, due to a bold research program led by MBL Bay Paul Center Scientist Julie Huber and her colleagues from several institutions. The program has received a $2.25 million award from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
"Microbial communities dominate nearly every corner of our oceans, yet they remain vastly under-sampled and our understanding of them is severely limited," Huber says. This is especially true for microbes that live below the earth's crust, in the subseafloor, one of largest marine realms but also the hardest to access and explore.
Over the next three years, Huber and her colleagues will undertake novel and at times risky experiments some at the bottom of the ocean to understand the microbes and viruses in the subseafloor rocks of Axial Seamount, a deep-sea volcano in the Pacific Ocean about 300 miles west of Oregon.
The scientists aim to "break open the black box of deep-sea microbiology, and take our understanding of subseafloor microbial processes and the carbon cycle to a new level."
Because Axial is a highly active volcano that spews hot fluid from its depths, millions of microbes that are normally buried are pushed up in the vent fluids, where scientists can capture them for study. In 2007, Huber and other MBL scientists discovered an amazing diversity of microbial life in the Axial vent fluids, which were analyzed at the MBL's Josephine Bay Paul Center.
And yet, they have just scratched the surface of understanding this dynamic ecosystem.
Very little is known about how viruses and microbes interact in the subseafloor, Huber says, which is one focus of their research. "Are the viruses infecting the microbes? Are they killing them? Are they transferring genes? We don't know. The field of environmental viral ecology has come a long way in the past decade, and we have a picture of how viruses work in the surface ocean. But there have been very few studies in the deep sea."
The scientists also seek a more detailed "portrait" of the microbial members of the subseafloor community. They want to know who the "producers" are in this unique food chainthe microbes that, like plants on land, can capture energy, synthesize their own food, and in turn serve as food for other organisms. (On land, the producers capture energy through photosynthesis; in the deep ocean, where there is no light, they rely on chemical energy.)
And finally, a major question is how subseafloor microbes alter the flow of carbon and nutrients in the deep ocean.
"The ocean is a huge sink of carbon, and we know very little about how carbon is moving in the deep ocean," Huber says. "We are interested in knowing how much carbon is being controlled by microbes in the deep sea; how much carbon is being fixed, and how much is coming out of the vent ecosystem." This could have important implications, as some nations are considering injecting carbon dioxide from fossil fuel use into the ocean floor, which at present would have completely unknown consequences.
One of the most exciting prospects is how Huber's team will sample and analyze the vent fluids. Typically, on research expeditions to deep-sea vents, the ship lowers a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) down to the vent, nearly a mile below the ocean surface. There, the ROV's robotic arm captures the hot fluid samples and brings them back to the ship for onshore analysis. For the first few years, Huber's team will follow this traditional method.
However, they also plan to develop novel protocols and instruments so they can drop down to Axial, take fluid samples, and carry out experiments on the seafloor.
"Normally, after we take a vent sample, it has to travel all the way back up through the water column to the ship, so it goes through a lot of pressure and temperature changes and there is a big time lag," Huber says. That leads to questions about how well the lab measurements reflect the "reality" in nature. "Here, the idea is to collect the samples on the sea floor, keep them at in situ pressure and temperature, run an experiment, and then stop the experiment on the seafloor. We can then analyze the results back in the lab." This will allow them to compare seafloor and lab experiments and see if they get the same result.
The project is taking place at an exciting time at Axial Seamount, which is one of the best-studied deep-sea volcanoes in the world. By 2013, Axial will be connected to land by live cable for power and communications, through the National Science Foundation's Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). The protocols that Huber and her team are developing for seafloor sampling and analysis could be integrated into the Axial Seamount node of the OOI.
Joining Huber, who is the lead scientist on the project, are principal investigators Joseph Vallino of the MBL's Ecosystems Center, who will develop an integrated ecosystem model of subseafloor viral and microbial communities; David A. Butterfield and Giora Proskurowski of University of Washington; James F. Holden of University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and Lisa Zeigler Allen of J. Craig Venter Institute.

?An international group of scientists on Sunday called for all adults who test positive for HIV to be treated with antiretroviral drugs right away rather than waiting for their immune systems to weaken,? Agence France-Presse reports. The guidelines, issued by the International Antiviral Society-USA, ?are based on new trial data and drug regimens that have become available in the last two years which warrant an ?update to guidelines for antiretroviral treatment in HIV-infected adults in resource-rich settings,?? the news agency writes (7/22). ?In addition, data have shown that suppressing HIV reduces the risk of an infected person passing the virus to another person,? according to Reuters. The guidelines, which ?echo those issued in March by the U.S.

Alt-week peels back the covers on some of the more curious sci-tech stories from the last seven days.
Whether you've got your head in the clouds, or your feet firmly locked on terra firma (or is that terrorist firma?) the last seven days in Alt have something for you. We look at a massive aircraft, that could revolutionize air travel as we know it, as well as look back at a real-world project that heralded a significant shift even further up in the sky. There's the NASA logo that never came to be, and lastly, for those less fond of heights, we hear how a US government department is heading in the other direction -- albeit culturally -- all in the fight against terror. This is alt-week.

Utah citizens are the proud owners of gold and silver commemorative coins from a company now in receivership, its owner charged with running a $100 million Ponzi scheme.
The coins were given to Gov. Gary Herbert during a 2011 signing ceremony for HB317, the tea-party backed bill that made gold and silver legal tender in Utah. Along with Carl Wimmer?s official state gun bill, HB317 attracted international attention and bolstered Utah?s image as, say, unique.
The grateful donor of the gifts was Wayne L. Palmer, who helped push through the Utah Legal Tender bill, legislation said to be the first step toward states being able to mint their own currency.
Last month, the Securities and Exchange Commission obtained a restraining order and asset freeze against Palmer, alleging he had operated a Ponzi scheme through his real-estate firm, National Note of Utah.
The SEC, in a press release, said 600 investors nationwide lost approximately $100 million.
Palmer is owner or a principal in dozens of companies that were put in receivership by the SEC. One of those firms is Old Glory Mint, a Utah company that mints high-quality gold and silver commemorative coins like the two given to Herbert at the signing ceremony.
Wayne Klein, the court-appointed receiver in the case, said the assets of Old Glory Mint originally were frozen along with National Note and most of the other companies controlled by Palmer. But he has unfrozen Old Glory?s assets because it is a profitable company and its continuing profits will make it more valuable when the assets are eventually sold.
Palmer was one of a group of advocates, including tea-party activists who ushered the Legal Tender Act, sponsored by Rep. Brad Galvez, R-West Haven, through the Legislature.
A New York Times story about the legislation quoted advocates saying it happened first in Utah for a reason.
"For many of its supporters," said The Times, "the new law represents an extension of the notion of preparedness that is nurtured by Utah?s powerful founding institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Many of the law?s supporters believe policies like stimulus spending, the bank bailout and national health care will soon bankrupt the government, sending inflation soaring. Owning gold and silver, they say, will help protect people."

"It?s kind of written into our theology that we?re supposed to be prepared for any eventuality," Lowell Nelson, of the Campaign for Liberty, told The Times.
?
Cause and effect ? The Republican fundraiser and tea-party organizer who was charged Wednesday with 23 counts of rape was a busy blogger on GOP websites last year, advocating the expulsion from the Republican Party of then-State Rep. Holly Richardson, R-Pleasant Grove, claiming she was a fraud and a traitor to the party.
Greg Peterson, well-known in Republican circles because of his annual Rocky Mountain Conservative Retreat and Barbecue that attracted high-profile Republican candidates and donors, aimed most of his internet vitriol at Richardson?s support of HB116, the illegal-immigration bill that contained a guest-worker provision.
But Republican bloggers responding to his attacks had another theory about his dislike of the legislator and popular conservative blogger. Peterson had persistently sent emails to Richardson?s 20-something daughter, asking her out on a date, Richardson has confirmed. Her daughter refused to go out with him.

Millions of people suffering from Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injuries or amputees could soon interact with their computers and surroundings using just their eyes, thanks to a new device that costs less than ?40.
Composed from off-the-shelf materials, the new device can work out exactly where a person is looking by tracking their eye movements, allowing them to control a cursor on a screen just like a normal computer mouse.
The technology comprises an eye-tracking device and "smart" software that have been presented today, Friday 13 July, in IOP Publishing's Journal of Neural Engineering. Researchers from Imperial College London demonstrated its functionality by getting a group of people to play the classic computer game Pong without any kind of handset. In addition users were able to browse the web and write emails "hands-off".
The GT3D device is made up of two fast video game console cameras, costing less than ?20 each, that are attached, outside of the line of vision, to a pair of glasses that cost just ?3. The cameras constantly take pictures of the eye, working out where the pupil is pointing, and from this the researchers can use a set of calibrations to work out exactly where a person is looking on the screen.
Even more impressively, the researchers are also able to use more detailed calibrations to work out the 3D gaze of the subjects ? in other words, how far into the distance they were looking. It is believed that this could allow people to control an electronic wheelchair simply by looking where they want to go or control a robotic prosthetic arm.
To demonstrate the effectiveness of the eye-tracker, the researchers got subjects to play the video game Pong. In this game, the subject used his or her eyes to move a bat to hit a ball that was bouncing around the screen ? a feat that is difficult to accomplish with other read-out mechanisms such as brain waves (EEG).
Dr Aldo Faisal, Lecturer in Neurotechnology at Imperial's Department of Bioengineering and the Department of Computing, is confident in the ability to utilise eye movements given that six of the subjects, who had never used their eyes as a control input before, could still register a respectable score within 20 per cent of the able bodied users after just 10 minutes of using the device for the first time.
The commercially viable device uses just one watt of power and can transmit data wirelessly over Wi-Fi or via USB into any Windows or Linux computer.
The GT3D system has also solved the 'Midas touch problem', allowing users to click on an item on the screen using their eyes, instead of a mouse button.
This problem has previously been resolved by staring at an icon for a prolonged period or blinking; however, the latter is part of our natural behaviour and happens unintentionally. Instead, the researchers calibrated the system so that a simple wink would represent a mouse click, which only occurs voluntarily unlike the blink.
Dr Faisal said: "Crucially, we have achieved two things: we have built a 3D eye tracking system hundreds of times cheaper than commercial systems and used it to build a real-time brain machine interface that allows patients to interact more smoothly and more quickly than existing invasive technologies that are tens of thousands of times more expensive.
"This is frugal innovation; developing smarter software and piggy-backing existing hardware to create devices that can help people worldwide independent of their healthcare circumstances."

Liverpool have confirmed that midfielder Maxi Rodriguez has joined Argentine side Newell?s Old Boys after two and a half years at Anfield. Maxi Rodriguez spent two-and-a-half years at Anfield. The 31-year-old signed from Atletico Madrid in January 2010, and scored 17 goals in 73 appearances for Liverpool, including two hat-tricks in a week in 2011. ?I have tried to give everything every day that I was wearing the LFC crest,? said the player in a letter to fans on the Liverpool website. ?It has been a great honour to defend this shirt during two and a half years. ?I am returning home with a suitcase full of great memories, good friends within the team and also within this great family that works every day in the club.? The upcoming documentary by Julia Ivanova, titled Family Portrait in Black and White features a Ukrainian foster mother, Olga, and her brood of 27 foster kids. Ranging in ages between grade schoolers and legal adults, Olga's children are for the most part the beautifully unique result of relationships between African students -- attending the affordable universities of the former Soviet country -- and Ukrainian women. In a national environment that presently leans more on the side of intolerance and bigotry, where neo-Nazi demonstrations can be the found on any given day in Kiev, Olga should be called a heroine.
Yet the beauty of Ivanova's insightful film lies in her cinematic portrayal of the woman behind the mother. Olga turns out to be a flawed, overbearing, opinionated result of the former Soviet regime, who loves by the rules and teaches by the book: her book. In other words, perfectly human.
I caught up with Ivanova about her touching film and she shared her insightful views on the film's imperfect heroine, as well as the future of these biracial children in a world that is increasingly partial to what is standard and un-unique.
Your film tells the story of a woman who is human, not just a heroine. How did you become aware of this particular story?
This particular story was very dear to me because for a number of years I wanted to make a film about biracial citizens of Eastern Europe and especially children who were born in Eastern Europe and don't have a second identity other than the identity of the nation they feel they belong to. But the society sees them as different, so I was looking for a story that would allow me to explore this topic in its whole complexity. I was filming in Moscow in 2004 when I saw an article in the local newspaper of this woman in Ukraine with photos. Immediately I thought it was an excellent, excellent story and I got in touch with her a year or two later and then came to meet her.
How did you decide which kids would have a stronger presence in the film?
When I came to this town, Sumy and I went to wait at their house, I was amazed at how open they were and immediately I could sense who was who among the children. It was very clear who is very interesting and who would represent what type of personality. Of course, I would have loved to have had more girls in the film, instead of mostly boys and it also just happened this way, it wasn't my choice. It's just that the boys were more authentic and more relaxed in front of the camera and they had more things to say. I had one girl whom I filmed more but then due to some personal circumstances she asked me to shorten her role in the film.
Do you think that culturally the boys were more able to express who they are?
Absolutely not! (laughs) There is total equality among genders in the former Soviet Union, so I wouldn't say that the girls who are of mixed race feel more victimized. It was just that it happened this way. I tried several of the girls, I tried, but as soon as they found out that I wanted to ask them personally some questions or I would talk with them, they would lose the ability to act naturally and would start to act. And be shy suddenly.
I read in the press notes that the hardest story for you to go back to is Kiril's -- nicknamed "Mr. President" -- because he moved away from Olga. Do you think there can be a happy ending to his story?
Kiril is in the U.S. right now, on a student summer exchange, working. He came for several months to work in a small town two hours from Chicago. Since their lives are continuing they will have lots of developments... In terms of Kiril, I think that as all other children they will carry all their lives what Olga has taught them, good things and bad things. And it will take a lot of time to have a more realistic understanding of what the world around them is, because I think and what I see in the children right now is the mentality where you feel you are an orphan and the whole world owes you because you are an orphan and that, Olga instilled in them. And also that the whole world owes her and nobody understands her and everybody is awful and everyone is not as smart as she is. I can see that it is damaging the ability of the children to feel healthy in their relationship with the outside world when they become older. I can see it in Kiril and I can see it in other children. But at the same time of course they are fighters and they are very strong and this is something that they have to learn.
As imperfect as Olga is, even our most beloved mothers can be flawed. She gives these kids a sense of community, so that they will grow up with others who are like them in a country where they might not otherwise "fit in." She may be imperfect but she is doing something. Personally, do you think it is more important to do something, even if you are not going to be right, rather than sit back and do nothing at all?
I think you phrased it in a very precise way. Exactly, the things that she's doing far outweigh the shortcomings that she has. The fact that she is doing what no one else in the country does I think only for that she deserves to be considered a hero, and some heroes are not perfect, and it's OK. And she gave them the feeling of community which is very important, they have basically no complexes that they are different from others because they grew up with children who are like them, so I think that in the circumstance that she lives in and with the Soviet background that she has, she has done the best job possible for these children. And at that age every child is critical of their parents but I think with age, and once they have their own children, they will really appreciate what she has done for them.
Your brother Boris Ivanov is the producer of the film. What are the pros and cons of working with a family member?
I think the fact that we are a team, and we feel that we are a team, that is the most important thing. The second important thing is that we can disagree and argue about something but the hard feelings will not stay for a long time because we are siblings. So that is very important. Although he is younger, he bosses me around. But he's a producer, so that's his job and he helps me a lot with technical elements and creative ideas and he himself is a very creative person. He did some award-winning films in the past and he's working as a director on different projects, so I think we are a good team.
If you weren't a filmmaker, what would you be?
If I were not be a filmmaker, I would be a social worker who works with children.
Family Portrait in Black and White opens on July 13th in NYC, at the AMC 25 in NYC.

Once a rising star, the Illinois Representative has not been seen in Congress since early June. Friends and colleagues say Jackson was being treated at a facility in Arizona. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.
By Andrea Mitchell, NBC News
Illinois Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr. faced new pressure from Democratic leaders Wednesday to explain his month-long absence from Congress, even as friends and colleagues tell NBC News that he has been at a treatment facility in Arizona.
A family friend who is in close touch with Jackson?s parents says the congressman is suffering from ?severe clinical depression? and has an alcohol problem ? although his wife and staff have a different view of his condition.
His wife, Sandi Jackson, texted NBC Chicago on Wednesday saying that her husband is ?not in rehab.? His staff issued a statement denying Jackson was being treated for alcoholism ? they say he is being treated for a ?mood disorder.?
?The Congressman is receiving intensive medical treatment at a residential facility for a mood disorder,? his office said in the statement. ?He is responding positively to treatment and expected to make a full recovery.?
A statement from Jackson?s physician also said that he is responding well.
Jackson?s father, civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, Sr. told NBC Chicago on Tuesday that his son is under medical supervision and is slowly regaining his strength.
"He is taking his time in his recovery and of course we pray for him and of course the family embraces him. We love him so much," Jesse Jackson, Sr. said.
Jackson has missed more than 80 votes and has not been seen in Congress since early last month, which has not settled well with Democratic colleagues.
Representative Steny Hoyer, Democrat from Maryland, said the congressman and his family should "advise the constituents of his condition. He?s obviously facing a health problem.?
Jackson still faces a House Ethics Committee investigation into whether he used his office to compel former Governor Rod Blagojevich to appoint him to the Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama in 2008. A former fundraiser for Jackson was arrested on June 20 by federal prosecutors in Illinois on unrelated charges. There have also been reported marital problems.
On Wednesday, a close friend of Jackson?s told NBC, "This has all come down on him like an avalanche and there is a good possibility he will have to resign." ?
Capitol Hill correspondent Kelly O?Donnell contributed to this report.
