George F. Kennan: An American Life

John Lewis Gaddis's biography is an important examination of a man who shaped the current American way of life.

If there were one word to encapsulate the life of George Frost Kennan, it would be ?conflicted.? Starting with his youth in Milwaukee in the first decades of the 20th century, and throughout a career that stretched from a foreign service position with the Coolidge administration, on through to the latter years of the Reagan presidency (when the president, as biographer John Lewis Gaddis laments, ?had little need of Kennan"), Kennan was often conflicted in his world view, though indeed ahead of his time ? in his thoughts, actions, and policy positions.

Gaddis, a Cold War scholar at Yale University and prize-winning author of several books on the subject, has provided an important, if not indispensable biography of Kennan in George F. Kennan: An American Life. Kennan was a figure alternately admired and reviled, but he was nonetheless an influential foreign serviceman, ambassador to both Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union, and a foreign policy strategist. In this context, it is not an overstatement to say that Kennan ? through the formulation of his Cold War ?Containment? strategy, his role as an architect of the post-World War II ?Marshall Plan?, and his passionate opposition to ?McCarthyism? ? was a central figure of the 20th century who alternately mirrored and molded our modern American way of life.

Gaddis?s account is refreshing in the sense that his interpretation of Kennan, his personality and beliefs, and his writings, is seemingly free of the ideological taint, sophistry, and hagiography that has so invaded political discussion in this early part of the new millennium. It is a very frank and open account. Gaddis undertook this project 30 years ago at the request of Kennan himself, with the provision that it not be published until after his passing. Within this tome?s nearly 1,000 pages, Gaddis has provided an extraordinary portrait of Kennan, which includes not only a wide range of Kennan?s views on political topics, but also throws light on his internal struggles and confessions about such deeply personal topics as morality and mortality, sex, loneliness, depression, and many others. Kennan does not hold back and Gaddis is both very faithful and fair to his subject.

In the earlier pages, Gaddis speaks about his methodology and his own philosophy about writing biography. In one instance, Gaddis discusses views of Kennan that could be viewed today as anti-Semitic. ?Biographers have an obligation ? to place their subjects within the period in which they lived: it is unfair to condemn them for not knowing what no one at the time could have known.? That sense of obligation extends to other characterizations of Kennan as well. Although Gaddis notes instances of solipsism and self-indulgence ? seasoned with occasional histrionics ? in Kennan's writing, Gaddis also makes clear that Kennan was likewise possessed of a powerful intellect, disciplined rectitude, and a remarkable prescience that produced, among other documents, the so-called? ?Long Telegram? ? a dispatch Kennan sent to soon-to-be US Atomic Energy Chairman David E. Lilienthal from Moscow in March of 1946. This was the single most important document that formulated America?s post-war Cold War policy toward the Soviet Union.

Summary Box: Stocks up on improving jobs, housing (AP)

STOCKS UP: The Dow Jones industrial average rose 135 points. The S&P 500 rose 13 points and is now up 5 points for the year. Stocks rose on better news on the job market and home sales.

HOUSING & EMPLOYMENT: Quincy Krosby, Prudential Financial's market strategist, was heartened by the better prospects for housing and jobs. That's because the correlation between the two has become more pronounced after the real estate bust. Banks tend to be reluctant to lend to people unless they currently hold jobs.

HOME BUILDERS UP: Stocks of home builders soared. Masco Corp. rose 8 percent, the most in the S&P 500. PulteGroup Inc. soared 6 percent.

Residents, pets escape burning home

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Three residents, two dogs and a cat survived a fire Tuesday morning on the west side of Indianapolis.

Fire crews were sent to the home in the 500 block of North Tibbs Avenue just before 5 a.m. When they arrived, fire and smoke was coming from the second story of the home.

Residents awoke to smoke detectors going off and one resident saw fire in the bathroom before safely evacuating. They told firefighters they had been having electrical issues and turned off power at the breaker before going to bed.

The home was badly damaged by fire. Battalion Chief Dave Grider estimates the home had $60,000 in damages. The residents were renting the home and will stay with friends.

Firefighters had the fire under control in 20 minutes and say an electric issue in the attic started the blaze. A Shitzu dog named Octuro, a Poodle named Ruben and a cat escaped with the home?s residents.

(AP) ? Investigators believe that seven people who were found dead Christmas Day were cleaning up holiday wrapping paper when they were shot inside a suburban Fort Worth apartment, but a motive remains unclear.

All of the victims appeared to be related, and Grapevine police said they believe the shooter was among the dead. Investigators were meticulously searching the apartment, along with three vehicles parked outside, and didn't expect to finish until dawn on Monday.

"It appears they had just celebrated Christmas. They had opened their gifts," Grapevine Police Sgt. Robert Eberling said, adding that the apartment was decorated for the holiday, including a tree.

The four women and three men, aged 18 to 60, were found dead in an adjoining kitchen and living room area when police arrived midday Sunday, shortly after receiving a 911 call in which no one was on the other line, Eberling said. Two handguns were found near the bodies, he said.

None of the victims has been identified, but Eberling said it appears they all died of gunshot wounds. He said authorities still don't know what sparked the incident.

Grapevine Police Lt. Todd Dearing said investigators believe that the victims were related, though some were visiting and didn't live in the apartment. He said police are looking for other relatives to inform of the deaths.

"Seven people in one setting in Grapevine, that's never happened before. Ever," Dearing said.

Police and firefighters first rushed to the Lincoln Vineyards complex after receiving the open-ended 911 call at about 11:30 a.m., Eberling said.

"There was an open line. No one was saying anything," he explained.

So police went into the apartment, located in the middle-class neighborhood of Grapevine, not far from the upscale Fort Worth suburb of Colleyville. The apartment was at the back of the complex, overlooking the athletic fields of Colleyville Heritage High School.

But many of the nearby apartments are vacant, and police said no neighbors reported hearing anything on a quiet Christmas morning when many people were not around.

Jose Fernandez, a 35-year-old heavy equipment mechanic who moved to the complex with his family about six months ago, said he always felt safe in the area, but is now afraid to let his 10-year-old son play freely outside.

"This is really outrageous especially on Christmas," said Fernandez, who was visiting family for the holiday and returned to find several police cars parked outside his home.

"This has shocked everybody. It has scared everybody. I guess something like this can happen anywhere, but seven people dead. It's just very scary," he added.

Eberling agreed the area is fairly quiet, noting this would be the first homicide in Grapevine since 2010.

Christy Posch, a flight attendant who moved to the complex about six months ago so her son could attend the high school, said she lives a few buildings away and did not hear any gunshots.

"It's all families. That's why I moved here. No burglaries, no nothing," Posch said.

Tebow throws 2 pick-6s

QB intercepted 4 times as Denver falls into tie with Oakland top AFC West

Image: Spencer JohnsonAP

The Bills' Spencer Johnson (91) celebrates his touchdown after intercepting a pass from Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

By JOHN WAWROW

updated 6:52 p.m. ET Dec. 24, 2011

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Tim Tebow picked a terrible time to run out of fourth-quarter comebacks.

Rather than inspiring the Denver Broncos to another dramatic rally, the quarterback sealed the most dreadful performance of his two-year career by throwing four interceptions - all in the second half and two returned for touchdowns 18 seconds apart - in a 40-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.

It happened as the Broncos (8-7) had a chance to inch closer to clinching their first playoff berth in six years, and against a Bills team that was coming off seven straight losses and had little to play for.

"My confidence is just fine," Tebow said. "I have to do a better job of not giving them opportunities. I tried to make something happen, and I tried to force it."

Denver coach John Fox hasn't lost faith in Tebow.

"I just think a couple of misreads," Fox said.

And no, he gave no thought of pulling Tebow at any point during a second half in which four of the Broncos' final six possessions ended with interceptions.

On the bright side, Denver's not done yet, despite falling into a tie with Oakland atop the AFC West. Denver closes its season by hosting the Kansas City Chiefs next week, and still holds the tiebreaker edge over the Raiders.

"Everything is still on the table," Tebow said. "We have to go and execute and play a little better. Hopefully, we can get in the tournament."

Tebow finished 13 of 30 for 185 yards with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Fells. He added 34 yards rushing, and scored on a 1-yard plunge.

That wasn't nearly good enough for a player who entered the game best known for engineering five fourth-quarter comebacks this season.

The Bills (6-9) made sure he never got in position for a sixth in coming away with a win in their home finale.

Safety Jairus Byrd and linebacker Spencer Johnson scored on interception returns 18 seconds apart midway through the fourth quarter. C.J. Spiller rushed for a career-best 111 yards and a touchdown, and Leodis McKelvin scored on an 80-yard punt return.

"It's special," Johnson said. "We had a monkey on our back for a long time."

Added safety George Wilson: "It's a great reward for the resilience, commitment and dedication."

The Bills' four interceptions were two more than they managed in their previous seven games. They have returned five interceptions for touchdowns to set a single-season franchise record.

If the game wasn't over with 8:03 left when Byrd jumped in front of Tebow's pass intended for Eric Decker up the left hash mark and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown, then it certainly was decided on the Broncos' next play from scrimmage.

Tebow was flushed from the pocket and was scrambling to his left when linebacker Chris Kelsay dived from behind and batted the ball out of the quarterback's hand. The ball flew into the air and landed in the hands of Johnson, who ran it in from 17 yards.

Kelsay, the longest-serving member of the defense, had two sacks and led the team with nine tackles.

"We've lost seven games in a row. It wears on you," Kelsay said. "We got rewarded. We came together and we executed."

After weeks of assertive defense, the Broncos gave up 40 points for a second straight game - though Tebow's giveaways certainly didn't help. And yet Denver allowed 160 yards rushing and 351 yards in all to a banged-up Bills offense that was averaging 14.2 points and 314.7 yards during its seven-game skid.

While Tebow was struggling, Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick enjoyed his most efficient game in two months by going 15 of 27 for 196 yards with no interceptions. Fitzpatrick entered the game taking plenty of heat during the seven-game skid, in which he threw eight touchdowns versus 12 interceptions.

Dave Rayner shook off two missed field-goal attempts - and a booing crowd - to hit his final four, all from within 29 yards.

"I'm glad that Coach stuck with me," Rayner said. "I'm glad that we got opportunities, because I never want to leave a game going oh-fer."

Except for scoring touchdowns on their first possession of each half, nothing went right for the Broncos.

They went nowhere in the first half after Tebow capped a 73-yard opening drive with a 1-yard run. Denver managed just 21 yards and no first downs on its final six possessions, including a kneeldown in the final seconds.

They finished converting just two of 13 third-down chances and Tebow had four of his final six drives end with interceptions.

NOTES: After McKelvin scored, Denver's Eddie Royal returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, but it was negated by a block in the back penalty against Dante Rosario. ... Broncos RB Willis McGahee had 64 yards rushing to give him 1,054 this season. He became the second NFL player to reach 1,000 yards rushing with three teams. He previously did it with Buffalo and Baltimore. Ricky Watters rushed for 1,000 yards with San Francisco, Philadelphia and Seattle. ... The Bills finished 5-3 at home (including a win over Washington at Toronto), matching their best record since going 5-3 in 2004.

EVO View 4G Honeycomb update officially official, and easy instructions to unbrick now available

View 4G

Sprint has made the EVO View 4G update we told you about earlier official, with a press announcement that gives a bit more detail about what to expect.  Besides the normal Honeycomb features, and the disabling of the capacitive buttons, the 3.2 update for the View also supports system-wide support for HTC Scribe -- including document signature capture from ActSoft.  We've got the press release after the break.

And do note that your home screens will be reset. Bummer, but so's not having Honeycomb.

What if you failed to heed the warnings and tried to update your rooted S-Off EVO View and now have a lovely brick?  Our forum developers once again have the situation covered with a short post explaining how to get out of the bootloop, get recovery back up and running, and restore an older back-up.  Much better than panicking at 2AM and waiting for the battery to die.  Hit the link to have a look.

Bacteria that could pass as X-men: part 2

Second part of my thinly veiled excuse to research X-men and call it work. The first post can be found here. This is only meant to be a two-parter but I?ll see how I feel on Monday, and whether I can find any more X-men that are as amazing as bacteria.

4) Multiple Man

Multiple Man?s power is that he can replicate himself, splitting his body into two or more identical copies in clear violation of the laws of conservation of mass. When he wants to get rid of these extra bits he can sort of return them to his body, reforming as one person. It?s strongly suggested that he remains in control of all the extra multiple men as well, one of them can?t go off and (say) rob a bank without him controlling it.

The bacteria: E. coli
[Edited due to serious reading comprehension error!]

Bacteria are the masters of dividing quickly and unlike multiple man, they aren?t constrained by how many copies they can produce. E, colis is one of the fastest dividing bacteria in the world, splitting into two once every 15-20 minutes. While this might be slower than multiple man can manage, the end results are far more spectacular:

For those that can?t get the sound, that?s five thousand billion billion bacteria produced in one day, just from a single dividing cell. (link to video on youtube)

5) Berzerker

Berzerker is one of the lesser known X-men having appeared in only one of the comics. He did, however, make it onto two of the animated series (X-men: Evolution, the one where everyone is a teenager, and Wolverine and the X-men, which I?ve never seen). His power involves the manipulation of electrical energy; he can throw balls of electricity at people, convert his body into raw electricity, and change the channels on the TV without needing a remote.

The bacteria: Geobacter

I covered the amazing powers of Geobacter in my first ever post on this blog, but it?s well worth reiterating because they are awesome. Geobacter might not be able to shoot balls of lightning at people, but they can certainly run a current through themselves, and more excitingly, they can run an electrical current up through a whole column of bacteria, essentially converting a chain of bacteria into a piece of electrical wiring.

geobacter transferring electricity

A chain of bacteria running an electrical current from the base of the mud to the top of the water. Picture (c) me.

The electrons are needed for the redox reactions that all organisms need to carry out to survive. By picking up electrons from the mud, and then transferring them up through pili to the surface the bacteria create an electrical current. You can read more about it on the old post.

6) Mystique

Raven Darkholme, aka Mystique. In the film she?s naked and blue with strategically placed scales. In the comics she?s still blue but wears a little black two-piece for dignity. Head (or second in command depending on what universe you?re in) of the brotherhood of evil mutants, her power is the ability to change form, to shape-shift into the features of another person.

The microorganism:?Trypanosoma Brucei

I?ve cheated here a little. T. brucei isn?t actually a bacteria, instead it?s a single-celled protist, one of those organisms which are two large and structured to be a bacterium, but too?weird?to properly be a eukaryote.

?

T. brucei

False colour SEM of T. brucei, from Zephyris via wikimedia commons (credit below).

T. brucei causes sleeping sickness, and has a fairly complex lifecycle involving humans and tsetse flies. Once inside the human it travels around in the blood, and can?occasionally?make its home inside various organs. Floating around in the bloodstream, however, is dangerous as it won?t be long before part of the human immune system will recognise the intruder and start to rally a force to attack it.

The T. brucei deals with this by periodically changing its skin. Like Mystique, it can change form so that by the time the immune system gets back all ready to attack the recognisable intruder the intruder is no longer recognisable. The outer surface of the T. brucei is covered with a molecule called VSG (variable surface glycoprotein) and the T. brucei genome contains the information for an entire archive of VSGs, with only one being expressed at any one time. By switching to a new VSG, the T. brucei can remain hidden inside the body, constantly changing form and escaping capture.

Analysis: Rising prices main clue to Iran sanctions impact (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Tehran does not look like a city under siege.

Its shops and markets are full of goods and customers; signs that international sanctions are ravaging Iran's economy are hard to detect.

With global oil prices above $100 a barrel, the world's fifth biggest oil exporter is proving it can cope with trade and financial restrictions that the United States and Europe hope will force a halt to its controversial nuclear program, which is suspected of seeking to build an atomic bomb.

That helps to explain the Iranian government's continued defiance as the West considers fresh sanctions that would take direct aim at the country's oil income.

"Sanctions do not turn off the money spigot, even while they may force re-routing of money flows through new third-party actors -- foreign banks unaffiliated with the U.S., for instance," said Kevan Harris, an Iran expert at Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

PRICES

International sanctions imposed over the last five years have so far banned most U.S.-Iran trade, caused many shipping companies to cut back services to the country, and made it difficult for Iranian banks to do business with Western banks.

But in the vast majority of cases, that does not appear to have stopped Iranian factories from operating or everyday products from reaching shelves in shops. Imports can be obtained from new suppliers and ships run to different foreign ports, many of them in Asia, analysts say.

The sanctions are mainly being felt in the form of inflation, which is hitting some companies' bottom lines as well as consumers' wallets.

In a well stocked greengrocer's in central Tehran, the shopkeeper and an elderly customer exchange the obligatory courtesies known in Iran as "t'aarof."

"There's no charge" for her purchases, the shopkeeper tells her with customary politeness.

After she insists on paying and he reveals that the small bag of fruit costs more than $10, she drops the social niceties and exclaims: "How much? Are you sure?"

The official inflation rate stands at just under 20 percent -- up from a 25-year low of 8.8 percent in August 2010. According to an International Monetary Fund report based on government data, Iran can expect consumer price inflation of 22.5 percent for the fiscal year ending in March 2012.

Many Iranians believe the statistics grossly underestimate the true cost of living, which is eroding their spending power in a country where the average monthly household income in urban areas is just 10 million rials (around $750) and unemployment is estimated at 14.6 percent.

Most of the rise in inflation can be put down to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's decision to abolish billions of dollars of government subsidies that until one year ago had held down the prices of gasoline, food and utility bills.

But sanctions -- particularly those passed by the EU in July 2010 which made it difficult to transfer cash in and out of Iran -- have also pushed up prices, analysts say.

Because of the EU sanctions, Western banks no longer offer Iranian importers letters of credit, the common way of paying for products in international trade.

That forces importers to pay for their goods with other means, including through banks that have branches in countries in the Middle East and Asia where the sanctions do not apply, or through money exchange bureaus.

COSTLY DOLLARS

Not only does that deprive importers of good terms of credit, it obliges them to pay the free market exchange rate for foreign currency, making dollars or euros much more expensive than the official Iranian central bank rates indicate.

Dollars bought in the open market cost almost 20 percent more than the official rate posted by the central bank, which is struggling to maintain the value of the Iranian rial in the face of speculative buying of hard currency inside Iran.

Imported goods from Europe have become more expensive in Iran not because the products themselves are banned, but because of the added costs due to channeling payment for them through third parties.

A businessman who runs a paint factory near Tehran said sanctions had forced him to look elsewhere for a chemical additive that he once imported from Germany, but had now become too expensive to buy from German suppliers.

"It isn't a static situation, it's changing day-by-day," he said, adding that while all products would continue to find their way to the Iranian market, costs would continue to rise.

Some businesses are obtaining favorable letters of credit from banks in South Korea and China as exporters there seek to make up for waning demand in the economically weakened West.

"At the end of the days it's the people who are losing their buying power...They will feel it in six months, eventually they will pay the price, there's no doubt," the businessman said.

NEW SANCTIONS

The ability of the Iranian economy to keep functioning in such adversity is at least partly responsible for the decision of the West in the last several months to consider additional sanctions, and for Iran's defiance in the face of the threat.

The European Union may stop buying the 18 percent of Iran's oil shipments that it imports. And the U.S. Congress is pushing for measures that would penalize foreign banks doing any business with Iran's central bank -- potentially a heavy blow against the body which takes payment for the 2.6 million barrels of oil that Iran exports per day.

The sensitivity of targeting the Central Bank of Iran was demonstrated two weeks ago after Britain, before any similar action by its EU partners, banned all its financial institutions from doing business with the country including the central bank. A mob stormed the British embassy compound in Tehran.

Iran's mild-mannered foreign minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, expressed "regret" at the violence but he said London only had itself to blame. "Britons angered the Iranian people with their stance," he said.

London's move was largely symbolic as few if any British banks have business with Iran or its central bank. The threat from Washington is far greater, as banks around the world would face being frozen out of the global financial system if they continued to trade with Tehran.

So far, however, Iranian politicians and media say they doubt the EU will ban Iranian oil or that Washington will push ahead with isolating the central bank completely.

"Greece, Italy and Spain are Iran's top oil importers (in the EU), and they have the most fragile markets as well. Any disruption of oil flow will cause an energy crisis in those countries," an Iranian Oil Ministry official said.

That analysis is to some degree shared by many Western diplomats and traders contacted by Reuters. Officials in the Obama administration have said they oppose hitting Iran's global oil exports or its central bank, because of the potential impact on the world's economy, although pressure for such a move has increased in Congress.

"Europe and America cannot seriously put the sanctions into practice and the Islamic Republic has the upper hand in the current situation and can take advantage from the existing circumstances," Parviz Sorouri, a member of parliament's national security committee, told the Fars news agency.

Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi said sanctions on Iranian oil would hurt the global market and that Iran would have "no problem to find a replacement for the EU."

Google prepping Siri competitor, codenamed 'Majel': rumor (Digital Trends)

majel-googleGoogle engineers are reportedly working furiously to create their answer to Apple?s Siri voice assistant, which serves as one of the few primary selling points of the iPhone 4S. The details come via Android and Me, and remain unconfirmed from Google.

According to the report, the project is codenamed Majel, after the voice of the Federation Computer in Star Trek, late actress Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, who was also the wife of the show?s creator, Gene Roddenberry. (Yes, Google engineers are that geeky.)

The artificial intelligence software is the next evolution of Google?s Voice Actions feature in Android. Like Siri, Majel will allow users to perform functions on their mobile device using natural language. Majel will allegedly be one of the first major projects to come out of Google X, the Mountain View, Califorina-company?s ?secret? development sector, which works on ambitious, often covert, projects, like Google?s self-driving cars.

As anyone with an iPhone 4S knows, Siri is both amazing and idiotic, all at the same time. Sometimes, it understands you perfectly; other times, it fails to grasp even the most basic of tasks. Of course, Apple insists that Siri is a work in progress, and will get better over time. It will be interesting to see whether Majel can leapfrog Siri in the performance department from the get-go.

Majel will reportedly be released by the end of this year, which is only a few weeks away.

Review: Winehouse album stirs sadness ? and joy (AP)

Amy Winehouse, "Lioness: Hidden Treasures" (Universal Republic)

Although "Lioness: Hidden Treasures" serves as Amy Winehouse's posthumous album and the follow-up to 2007's "Back to Black," the multiplatinum, multi-Grammy winning album that would define her short career, it was not intended as such: While she started on material for a third album, one had not been finished at the time of her death on July 23 from alcohol poisoning. And of the 13 songs on "Lioness," only four were recorded in her post-"Back to Black" era: "Body & Soul," the Tony Bennett duet already included on Bennett's own "Duets II" this year; "Between the Cheats"; the Nas collaboration "Like Smoke"; and "A Song for You."

Listening to those most recent tunes, especially "A Song for You" ? a remake of the Donny Hathaway classic ? you can hear why that true third album never materialized. On the song, Winehouse's once strong, smoky and sultry voice had lost some of its vitality, and while she showed flashes of spark, she stumbles her way through her performances: It's heartbreaking to hear such a marked decline in just a few short years.

Still, it's a gift to hear anything from Winehouse in the wake of her untimely death, and this new compilation features true treasures recorded between 2002, a year before her debut album, "Frank," and this year. Her rendition of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," a remake of the Shirelles' timeless song, is stirring: Recorded in 2004 with the Dap Kings, it showcases Winehouse when she was at or near her peak. At one moment, she sounds vulnerable, singing cautiously and tenderly; then she releases the full power of her voice, leaving the listener in awe. This song alone makes the album a must-get.

There are other treats as well. Remakes of "The Girl From Ipanema" and "Our Day Will Come" show Winehouse's playful side; "Halftime" recalls 1970s-era soul; and a slightly downbeat, less-produced version of the Mark Ronson-produced "Valerie" is even better than the original.

There are also alternate takes of her more popular songs, including a stripped-down "Wake Up Alone," which gives Winehouse's voice and an accompanying guitar more room to shine, and "Tears Dry," which Winehouse originally imagined as a ballad (the up-tempo version, "Tears Dry on Their Own," remains the better version).

Listening to most of the album will leave fans at first mournful over the loss of great talent at such a young age (she was 27 when she died). But the joy of having more Winehouse material to savor, especially since she had such a short catalog, is the emotion that remains.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: "Best Friends, Right," written solely by Winehouse and produced by frequent collaborator Salaam Remi, is a great example of why Winehouse was so endearing, with its wry humor: "You don't want me in the flat when you come home at night, but we're best friends ? right?"

2 giant pandas fly from China to Scotland (AP)

BEIJING ? Two giant pandas have flown from China to Scotland, where they will become the first pandas to live in Britain in nearly two decades.

The pandas, named Tian Tian and Yang Guang ? or Sweetie and Sunshine ? munched on bamboo at Chengdu airport ahead of their trip and arrived in Edinburgh later Sunday.

The pandas are to stay for 10 years at Edinburgh Zoo, where officials hope they will breed during their stay.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland will pay more than 600,000 pounds ($935,000) a year to China for the loan of Sweetie and Sunshine, not including the expense of imported bamboo.

Britain's last giant panda lived in London Zoo until 1994, when it was returned to China.

Brad Pitt consoles suicidal actor

Brad Pitt was a real pal to a stranger in need on Sunday.

Following a special screening of "Moneyball" at the Cary Grant Theatre in Culver City, Calif. on Sunday, the star, 47, encountered a distraught man during a Q&A session with hundreds of fans.

According to an attendee, a 30-something struggling actor announced to Pitt, costar Jonah Hill and the crowd that he was battling suicidal thoughts alone in his car before the night's event-- but the film gave him "a renewed sense of hope." ?

(In the acclaimed film, Pitt plays real-life Oakland As general manager Billy Beane, who built a champion team using computer-generated analysis to draft its player.)

"It was a really awkward moment," the attendee tells Us, adding that the actor got "choked up" as he revealed his battles to the crowd.

But Pitt didn't flinch, the witness says. "He said, 'Look, man, life is up and down, it's a vicious cycle, but you have to go through it and deal with that,'" the observer reveals.

The father of six and longtime love to Angelina Jolie continued in his pep talk: "'You can be down, but then you come back up again, and every failure can lead to success.'"

"It was a touching moment," adds a second observer. "As he left the theatre he even stopped to talk with the guy to offer him some more words of encouragement because he was obviously fragile."
